Budget fabrics: buy what the project needs

A low unit price is useful, but it does not guarantee a cheaper completed project. A material that misses the labels or colour you need can lead to another purchase later.

Use the table as a shopping reference

These examples come from a community guide marked for Build 410. Compare the names, prices and labels in your own shop rather than treating the list as guaranteed current stock.

Fabric example Reported use
Amethyst Cotton Casual, Cool, Daywear, Simple
Aqua Blue Cotton Cute, Playful
Cloud White Cotton Romantic
Salmon Cotton Workwear
Strawberry Fields Cotton Print Flowers

Ask four questions before buying

  1. Does it meet this brief’s material and colour conditions?
  2. What is the current unit price and intended quantity?
  3. Does the print suit the bodice and skirt in your design?
  4. Will you still have a budget for necessary accessories?

Keep those answers together. Previously purchased inventory is not the same as material actually used in this garment.

Is a more expensive fabric worth it?

It can be, when you want its appearance and the budget supports the choice. A cutting practice project can stay simple; a high-cost achievement project can have a separate plan. We have no evidence that an expensive purchase alone makes perfect quality easier.
